Planning
Thompson has been operating on the Suncor Base Plant (Mine Site) on a continuous basis since 2001.
Thompson’s original project on this site was to haul material across the Athabasca River Bridge for building of filters in dikes. This work was primarily completed with 769 haul trucks converted for bottom dump trailers, which proved unique in design for the industry and provided cost efficiency to the Client. This project ran for 10+ years with +25,000 loads hauled across the bridge, which required traffic control for one-way haul of loaded trucks due to bridge weight restrictions, and no major disruptions of traffic or environmental incident / release in this environmentally sensitive area.
Thompson has since participated in many reclamation projects on the site for removal of reclamation materials and reclaimed 100’s of hectares of previously mined or disturbed areas. One project highlight worthy of note is being included in the 2010 President’s Operational Excellence Award for the Final Closure of Pond 1 – Overall Environmental and Sustainability Team Award, completing solid cover over one of the original tailings pond in the Oilsands.
Other work completed and ongoing on the site include maintenance of roads, construction of light vehicle and major haul roads, dykes, ponds, buttresses and most recently overburden removal with the introduction of 200-ton haul trucks to our growing fleet of equipment. Thompson has proven that we can complete these projects safely, on schedule, and on budget.
