Description: Thompson Construction Group is seeking a Heavy Equipment Field Maintenance Supervisor in Fort McMurray and its surrounding areas. In this role, reporting to the Fleet Maintenance Manager, the Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for ensuring the quality, quantity, and safety of mechanical repairs completed by technicians. They will collaborate closely with the Operations team to meet client needs and ensure equipment availability. The supervisor will prioritize and assign tasks based on technician skillsets to optimize efficiency. This fast-paced position requires strong interpersonal, organizational and technical skills to manage shifting priorities effectively.

 

Responsibilities:

The Heavy Equipment Field Maintenance Supervisor at Thompson Construction Group will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including:

  • Equipment Tracking: Ensure knowledge of all equipment on-site, including its status (active, available, or in repair).
  • Daily Toolbox Meetings: Conduct daily meetings to communicate safety and operational priorities.
  • Site Operations Collaboration: Maintain frequent communication with Site Operations Management to understand daily repair priorities.
  • Maintenance Forecasting & Improvement: Liaise with both Operations and Maintenance teams to anticipate changes and suggest improvements in personnel or equipment.
  • Utilization Checks: Regularly monitor equipment usage before and after repairs to ensure efficiency.
  • Management of Maintenance Team: Oversee and manage on-site mechanics, welders, and servicemen, ensuring effective coordination and work completion.
  • Maintenance Planning & Scheduling: Collaborate with Operations to plan, prioritize, and resource all necessary trade support and turnaround work.
  • Cost-Effective Coordination: Coordinate maintenance activities to meet operational needs in a cost-efficient manner.
  • Performance Improvement: Develop and implement strategies to improve heavy equipment maintenance performance.
  • Technical Input: Provide insights into the development and optimization of maintenance procedures and systems.
  • Safety Compliance: Ensure adherence to corporate health and safety policies, maintaining a safe working environment.
  • Recruitment & Selection: Manage the hiring process for field mechanics, welders, and servicemen.
  • Document Control: Oversee submission of trade apprenticeship documentation and maintain proper documentation control.
  • Service Mentoring: Organize and mentor service teams involved in fuel, lube, mechanics, and welding.
  • Invoice Verification: Review and verify invoices related to equipment maintenance.
  • Policy and Warranty Awareness: Stay informed on policy and warranty issues that may impact equipment maintenance.

This role requires a balance of technical expertise, leadership, and organizational skills to ensure that all equipment is well-maintained, operational, and aligned with site needs.

 

Qualifications:

  • Management Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience in managing heavy equipment, heavy-duty mechanics, welders, and service personnel.
  • Maintenance and Repair Experience: At least 10 years of experience in maintenance and repair, specifically within the Heavy Civil Earthworks and/or Mining Industry.
  • Valid Driver’s License: Possession of a valid Class 5 driver’s license.
  • Teamwork: Ability to work effectively within a team environment.
  • Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Location Flexibility: Willingness to work in the Fort McMurray area and live in remote camps while working a rotational schedule.
  • Certifications: Holding CSTS/OSSA or BSO Certification.
  • Health & Fitness: Must be in good health and physical condition to perform the duties required.
  • Drug and Alcohol Testing: Ability to pass a pre-access drug and alcohol test.
